I’m very proud and excited about the results from this project… My girlfriend, Sam Pierpoint, is a paper illustrator and artist who creates these amazing 3D paper sculptures. It’s always been my job to photograph them for her – but this time we decided to do things a little differently. Instead of setting up the lighting and getting everything right in camera, I decided to try out some light composition techniques with this one. So what you can see below is actually made up of 45 layers in photoshop. Each layer is lit differently and we have selectively brushed each one onto the composite using layer masks and the “lighten” blending mode in Photoshop. This technique was inspired by Mike Kelley, who is arguably the world’s greatest architecture photographer and creates stunning light composites. Check out his work here!
Both Sam and I are very pleased with the results and are excited about doing more collaborations of this kind! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
